Software & Startup Videos
I’ve been recently watching a lot of startup videos for startups and software. Highly motivating if you intend on starting your own startup. Here’s a list of videos in no particular order. Feel free to share your own.
(Most of these videos are either on running a startup or creating simpler software.)
Jason Fried
Founder of 37signals which produces the startup-famous products: Basecamp and Highrise. Some tidbits can be found on their blog. Some of his ideas are pretty radical from traditional business practices. He’s done several talks which you can check, but these two videos I find the most intriguing.
The first video is from Business of Software, where he talks about (take a guess) running a software business. Which includes developing software and business growth, etc.
The second video is about marketing your products.
“Marketing by Sharing”
Dharmesh Shah
Founder of HubSpot and OnStartups Blog. He also talks about creating software as a business in a startup.
Aza Raskin
Founded Humanized, but recently hired by Mozilla to work for Mozilla Labs. Created Enso, a predecessor to Ubiquity, and Songza. He talks extensively about software usability through talks and his blog.
“Away with Applications: The Death of the Desktop”
And Aza Raskin at FOWA. He talks about Ubiquity, but it definitely can be related to web software in general.
Luis von Ahn
A CMU Professor that created ReCAPTCHA, GWAP (Games With A Purpose). He recently started blogging. Luis gives a solution to accomplish problems difficult for computers to solve utilizing humans in a clever way.
“Human Computation”
Barry Schwartz
A psychologist and professor. Not as publicly big on the internet as other speakers, but this talk is definitely worth mentioning. This talk gives an alternative perspective why giving too much choice to your users could be a bad thing.
“Paradox of Choice”
Google Video
If you prefer an abridged version (with slides included), check out when he spoke at TED.
Mike Arrington
Founder of the popular blog, TechCrunch. Writes about startups and various businesses. Here he talks at startup school about receiving press for your startup.
Paul Graham
Founder of ViaWeb (which he sold to Yahoo!) and a famous LISP programmer. He writes great essays on his site, including the famous “Beating the Averages”. Currently runs Y Combinator which funds several web startups and Hacker News.
David Hansson
Creator of the Ruby on Rails framework and works for 37signals. His talks cover similar aspects of Jason Fried, but this video is probably the most differentiable from Jason.
Contrast
Contrast is a company, not a person. But Eoghan Mccabe and Des Traynor from Contrast talk about how to stand out from the crowd (as that purple cow). Unfortunately, the audio quality on the video is pretty horrendous.
Paul Buchheit
Creator of Google’s Gmail and founder of FriendFeed. Here he talks about how to listen to your users and advice from others.
(I was going to embed the Omnisio video, but the video doesn’t load.)
Feel free the post your own in the comments or blog about it. I’d like to see other people’s recommendations.
